Tsavorite first came to the attention of the GIA thanks to Geologist Campbell Bridges. By then geopolitical conditions made him abandon his findings more than once.
Despite the setback in his research, Bridges managed to hit upon a huge vein of the jungle green stone in Kenya. The gem was named after Tsavo Park, one of the largest in Africa.
Sadly, Campbell Bridges was killed in a mining dispute between gangs trying to gain illegal control of the mines. Although those responsible were brought to justice, his dedication to exposing this beautiful gem to the world will always be remembered.
Magnificent properties of Tsavorite
Tsavorite is actually a Garnet. Specifically a type of very intense Green Grosularia Garnet. The color is due to the same chemical compounds that dye the emerald: Vanadium and Chromium. Despite this, the structure of Tsavorite is usually more striking and refracts much more light.
Although it is possible to find some visible inclusions in Tsavorite, this is not as common as in other gemstones, and its intense color and luster help to hide most of them very well.

A good Tsavorite is at least a hundred times harder to find than an emerald, to say the least. Let alone large stones. Less than 3% of the Tsavorite mined in the world annually exceeds 2 carats.
